The Georgetown, Texas Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual Chairman’s Gala and Awards Dinner, and the Georgetown, TX Field of Honor® was presented with the premier award of the evening, the Jesse “Buz” Sawyer Award.

Named in memory of a remarkable person whose gentle goodness remains as a guiding beacon to all who knew him, Buz served others through his many leadership roles in the community and encouraged generous philanthropy in support of healthcare, education, economic, religious and social causes. Buz helped to inspire the generosity of those whose financial gifts will continue to touch the lives of generations to come.

Shontel Mays, President and CEO of the Chamber notes that “while this award is not given every year, it makes it quite the honor when there is a person or organization in our community who rises to this level of extraordinary philanthropy.”  This year, the Board of Directors of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce has bestowed this prestigious award upon the Georgetown Texas Field of Honor®, a philanthropic program of the Rotary Club of Georgetown TX Foundation.

Established six years ago in Georgetown TX, the program has had a tremendous impact on the community. The net proceeds from its flag sales directly benefit veteran and first responder non-profit organizations. From the inception of the Field of Honor in 2017, $179,500 has been awarded to Beneficiaries and Affiliate organizations.

President Cathleen “Cat” Phelps, who accepted the award on behalf of the organization along with other members, remarked "this surprise recognition is a capstone moment for our Club! No service club does more, works harder, and creates environments of peace and honor like the Rotary Club of Georgetown Texas. This award reinforces our club’s desire to be “the Service Center of Georgetown” for another 60 years and we thank the Georgetown Chamber for this very special award.”
